Today, the job market is becoming increasingly competitive. With unemployment and inflation rates rising, the economy is spiraling downwards. In today’s fast-paced world, there’s enhanced competition but despite impressive qualifications, employment is hard to find for many. While rising unemployment levels and modern-day capitalism can be exhausting, long-term unemployment is unsustainable and can reduce the standard of living. For this reason, it’s important to have a job that covers your basic needs such as rent, food, and education. Moreover, basic self-sustenance is necessary in the modern world so you don’t fall into patterns of dependency. In this context, it’s hardly surprising that women are unlikely to date unemployed men. Here are the main reasons why.

Women are Becoming More Practical

The main reason why women prefer not to date men who are unemployed is that this is entirely impractical. It’s not feasible to be with a person who can’t support themselves financially. Thus, to turn this into a gender debate is inherently misogynistic and problematic. Women are typically shunned when they point out issues related to finance and money in relationships, but this is a practical approach. If they were to let emotions take over and accept any man regardless of his employment status, they would suffer in the future.

While it’s true that the current capitalist system forces everybody to take part in the grand rat race, a basic source of income is still necessary. This is how it’s been for a long time and it’s not likely to change anytime in the future. Therefore, even if you don’t believe in the system of labor, you still need to support yourself. Protesting this by not working and growing dependent on other people will only make things difficult for men.

The Role of the Economy

It’s no secret that the economy is worsening. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it has declined even further. In this context, it’s becoming hard for average people to support themselves. When it’s challenging to financially take care of a single person’s needs, how can women be expected to fulfill an unemployed man’s financial requirements too? In today’s modern world, even average married couples have moved away from traditional gender roles and norms.

Previously, it was common for men to work and for women to stay at home and take care of other needs. However, this isn’t a viable option anymore. Both husband and wife are expected to work today in order to sustain themselves and their families. Thus, when women are with men who have been unemployed for a long time, their resources are likely to run out at a faster rate. This makes the relationship unsustainable and difficult to manage.

Excessive Burden

When people aren’t employed, they don’t only have excessive financial needs but emotional ones too. When you’re at home all day, you’re less likely to socialize with other people. This means that you depend on the woman for additional emotional labor that requires a lot of effort from women. Apart from this, unemployed people are likely to grow tired and depressed by their lifestyles. This increases the chances of fights and miscommunication.

As a result, women will have to work overtime to pay for both of their financial needs while also carrying out excessive emotional labor. There’s also a chance that with such a partner, women will be robbed of their personal space. Because it’s unlikely for an unemployed man to have his own apartment, your boyfriend will likely stay at yours. This will not mean that somebody will always be invading your personal space, but you’ll also have no time for yourself left. Especially when you’re with a man who spends all his time at home.

Stunted Growth

Yes, jobs aren’t easy to find but you can’t put yourself in sticky situations at the expense of other people’s well-being. As more talent acquisition strategies involve hiring candidates who have niche skills and competitive qualifications, finding employment is becoming even harder. However, while it’s understandable how specific situations and circumstances can make it hard to find and maintain a job, expecting another person to provide for you despite limited means is an unfair expectation.

When a woman is with an unemployed man, in the long run, there’s a good chance that her chances of growth will considerably shrink. This is because she won’t be able to experiment and venture out because of a lack of affordability. When you’re supporting somebody other than yourself, you have to make sure that you have stability in the form of employment. This increases the pressure of work while also limiting other options. This is because you’ll be too scared to look for other options in case they don’t work out or don’t pay as well. Thus, while it’s easy to turn this into a debate about gender, unemployment in your partner is frowned upon today regardless of gender
