Without questions, the learning process would be incomplete. No matter how many ERP school software an institution installs, the correct methodologies of teaching always end with some questions. It could be in the form of multiple choice questions, long essay-type answers, or even fun quizzes. It is the best way to understand how people are lacking and the information they were able to absorb.

Have you ever felt like you would remember something in the classroom, without writing it down and entirely forget about it? This is a common occurrence. Students feel that they would remember something just because they remember it at present, and don’t take notes. No proper revaluation about it later keeps decreasing their progress in the classroom while they are unaware of it. Giving examinations and answering questions in written or oral forms makes them aware, impacting their classroom progress.

Since that is the entire point of education to raise responsible and learned students, questioning cannot be omitted from the educational strategies. In India, we take examinations very seriously. It is partially the reason why we have so many unique examinations for different fields of career. Every year millions of students participate in examinations- all from diversified career fields. Even a school ERP software India has inbuilt strategies to provide self-study questions and final year questions.

Importance of questions over answers

From a unique perspective, questioning is not the only thing teachers look for. They also urged students to ask questions instead, not only having doubts but also as a plain curiosity. The fact that these children have enough authentic understanding and intellectual value to question out-of-the-box shows their willingness to learn beyond the syllabus.

Any syllabus is a short part of the learning process students must learn to always know about a subject or topic as much as possible, especially if they want to pursue a career. When they ask a good question, it shows their thinking process and extent of knowledge.

Purpose of Academic Questions

  • Develop a level of competitiveness among students.
  • Initiate learning progress by including an element of urgency. Having an exam full of questions is a motivating factor that drives them to sit down and study.
  • Assess a student’s readiness for further learning and level of knowledge received from present session classes.
  • Expose new relations of concepts by initiating a thinking process through learning and nurturing insights.
  • Stimulate a student to pursue further knowledge in the same subject matter.
  • Summarize the effectiveness of previous lessons and learning methodologies a student might have used in the classroom.
  • Develop critical thinking and analysis skills among students.

Here is how teachers can participate in effective questioning;

  • Decide the purpose of asking the question.
  • Plan the topics, and inform every student beforehand allowing them the time to prepare.
  • Focus on the freezing of the question- it must be easy to understand what is being asked.
  • Every topic should be relevant. Learning about irrelevant topics that will not benefit them during exams and in life is pointless.
  • Strategize how you would reflect on incorrect answers.
  • Keep a differentiated set of questions to ask students with unique abilities.
  • Include open-ended questions for the very end. It allows students to use their thinking skills instead of memorizing capacity.
  • Have certain anticipation levels of answers, and not expectations as being disappointed yourself would reflect student performance by bringing down their motivation level too.
  • Allot less time for cognitive questions.

Teacher’s attitude in questioning sessions

Gestures- verbal and non-verbal established and understanding in the classroom. But before that, a teacher has to make the students comfortable enough. They must be familiar with the classroom environment and at ease. It helps them answer correctly rather than become nervous and forget. A teacher can expect good performance from the students, given they maintain a positive attitude during and after the questioning hour is over.

For orals examinations and question sessions, keep the following in mind;

  • Maintain a friendly demeanor and a positive tone or a neutral expression on your face.
  • Avoid interrupting a student while they answer. Give complete feedback only after they finish.
  • Encourage everyone’s participation, don’t make answering the questions compulsory, follow the raise the hand rule, and select options alternatively to give everyone an opportunity.
  • Fix it in some classes only for questions, don’t make it an everyday routine. Students do not prefer stressing about answering at the end of every class.
