Charcoal in Minecraft

In Minecraft, charcoal is a popular source of fuel. You can use it for smelting stuff or converting it into coal to prevent the requirement to create it yourself. You cannot generate charcoal from regular planks without a unique process called carbonization, which requires an active furnace and suitable supplies. Read on if you want to learn how to make your charcoal.

Methods to obtain charcoal in Minecraft

There are several methods for obtaining charcoal:

  • Using a furnace requires a regular furnace and doesn’t need any special items apart from coal. Once the coal has been put in the slot next to what you want to smelt, open up the furnace interface by pressing “F.”
  • Using a kiln – Thanks to this method, you can create up to 9 units of charcoal at once if you use nine pieces of coal. To set it up, place down your furnace first, then surround it with brick blocks so that there is no hole for the smoke coming out of the furnace to go through. Then put some sand on top of the bricks and light the stove with flint and steel or Redstone.
  • Using burning boxes – Thanks to this method, you can create up to four units of charcoal by putting down planks in a box shape configuration around any fire source (they don’t need to torch). The whole process should take about 4 minutes. Once time has passed, break the box and put your hands inside the topmost space where some items should be waiting for you.
  • Carbonization – Carbonization requires a furnace, a piece of coal or charcoal that is not used yet, and wood planks to be activated with the use of flint and steel or Redstone. Once these have been placed down on top of each other, they will begin the carbonization process, which will last for 4 minutes.

MATERIALS

  • An altar
  • A flint
  • Any kind of sugar
  • A bit of leather

Steps

  1. First, you’ve got to make a small effort to build an altar. An altar is the spawn point for the ritual of teleportation, which will allow you to teleport wherever you would like. You can place it down anywhere, but I recommend it be at least two blocks tall and deep. This way, any mobs that are generated by the ritual won’t pose much of a threat. Once you have your altar made, right-click on the top with flint in hand.
  2. Next, go ahead and set up your sugar cane farm so that there are nine stalks of sugar cane standing tall—Right-click on six of them with bone meal in hand to turn them into the tall grass. You only need the sugar cane itself turned into the tall grass, but it doesn’t hurt anything to do them all.
  3. Now, you’re going to want to go ahead and get your leather ready for the next step. Place the leather down in a straight line with two spaces between each piece of leather.
  4. Next, right-click on your altar while holding your blaze rod. A monster would spawn from within, kill it, and collect its drops, including four bones and a stone sword if everything went according to plan. Right-click on one of the bones with an empty hand while still holding onto the second one so that you have a whole stack in your inventory. Right-click on the first bone with your second one to turn them both into bones dust.
  5. Now, you can go ahead and right-click on your altar once more, which should bring up a prompt for you to choose what kind of sacrifice you would like to make. First, place four bone dust in a square formation followed by an equal amount of sugar cane to form the base for this new item type. Next, place down two emeralds vertically, horizontally, or diagonally adjacent from each other.

Finally, place down three pieces of leather perpendicularly across them one at a time, forming a pattern that resembles the rune/symbol for “Earth.” Once everything has been set up correctly, leave it overnight without breaking any blocks within range of the ritual. If all goes accordingly, you should receive one of two outcomes: You will spawn in a new area filled with zombies and skeletons or nothing will happen, and you’ll be left wondering what went wrong.

  • Assuming that outcome is what you received, kill the mobs within range of your altar, then build an iron golem on top of it by placing down nine iron ingots stacked vertically into the form of figure eight.
  • Once familiar enough with how this process works, I recommend only using half the amount of bone dust and sugar cane for each ritual while having no more than four stacks of leather at hand to make things slightly less complicated. The whole purpose behind why we needed sugar cane in the first place is to turn it into paper, which we’ll need for this next step.
  • Now that you’ve got everything ready, check your inventory and see if you have at least three leather and one bone dust remaining. If so, go ahead and right-click on the last bone dust with an empty hand while holding onto your leather to make papyrus. Papyrus will serve as our new type of “paper.”
  • Next, open up an inventory window to view your crafting grid. Place down two pieces of papyrus on the top row followed by a single piece directly below them on the second row like so

Summary

Well done! Even without mining coal, you can still light your first night with survival knowledge. The most common item many players overlook when they run low on coal is coal. If your coal supply runs out, this item can prove vital.
